Paintball Gun or Paintball Marker is a item specifically deigned to propel paintballs.  They cannot be converted to fire any other object and require a power source either Co2 gas or compressed air to operate (Air Systems) Australia they are classed as a firearm and come under Federal and State laws.

All Paintball Guns are classed as firearms and may only be owned by holders of a longarm Shooters Licence . To purchase you must provide a PTA (permit to acquire) or your state equivalent
